Clicking on the coat of arms (aka a "crest") for the province owner will take you to that faction's diplomacy page. Upon starting the game you'll be faced with something like this: You're also fairly isolated from immediate threats.
This is one of the reasons Apulia is a good starter. But having vassals help you get accustomed to some of the game mechanics. Not having a liege will help you avoid bankruptcy as he forces you to mobilize. Still not sure what the hell you're doing? Read this very informative post by President Rex:
